Council Meeting Highlights – March 26, 2021

Remembering Dr. Sorbara
College President Dr. Patrick Quaid opened the meeting with remembrances and remarks on Dr. Gina Sorbara, who passed away in February 2021. The University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science has established the Dr. Gina Sorbara Contact Lens Residency in her honour. The College made contributions to both the Canadian Cancer Society and the University of Waterloo residency in memory of Dr. Sorbara.

College Performance Measurement Framework
In 2020, the Ministry of Health launched the College Performance Measurement Framework (CPMF), a standardized reporting tool for regulatory colleges that measures performance in 38 requirements in areas such as governance, information management, and regulatory policies.

Following Council’s approval, the College’s CPMF report has been submitted to the Ministry of Health and is available to the public on the College website. This submission for the pilot phase of the CPMF shows the College is currently meeting 55% of the CPMF requirements and partially meeting 34% of the measures. Updates to the Public Register

Coming soon – updates will be made to the Public Register that will allow the public to search for optometry offices that are wheelchair accessible and for optometrists who provide home visits.

Revisions to the OPR
Council discussed suggested revisions to the Optometric Practice Reference (OPR) 7.12 Patients with Amblyopia and 7.13 Patients with Uveitis and asked that the Clinical Practice Panel conduct a further review of these sections before updating the OPR.

Our next Council meeting will be held virtually on June 18, 2021. Council meetings are open to the public. Guests may join via live stream – links are provided approximately two weeks ahead of the meeting date. Contact Amber Lepage-Monette with any questions.
